About
Welcome to Pop Meme – alt. with a dash of rec..
For anyone who knows their Usenet history, alt. was where the ad-hoc unapproved discussions were housed. It was a bit wild-west, but often where the action was, so you risked the occasional flame war to get the popular memes. The inhabitants of rec. were all carefully vetted and voted on for approval. There was a process and review before your subject was approved. Therefore it tended to attract the more academic or reasoned. That’s not to say an asbestos suit wasn’t required every now and then. If anything, passions were even more heated because there were ‘rules’ and if you broke the rules there would be hell to pay; which is not to say anyone ever agreed what the rules were at any given time. But that’s part of the charm of the internet.
Back in the day I used to write a web diary where I posted things I found interesting, diary type entries, and essays. That was 1998 and I was calling it ‘iURL – You Are Your URL.’ The theory was that we’re all cyborgs now. Our lives are inextricably intermingled with the internet. So why not take control of your footprint with your own URL and brand it so you at in charge of your online presence. Today they call this personal branding and good SEO.
Obviously, that term iURL never caught on. Instead we have weblog or blog. My iURL fell aside in 2003 and I debuted a slew of blogs in 2004 including TheDisneyBlog.com, which is my most successful blog by far. But for many years I’ve missed the carefree nature of a non-niche blog. I want Pop Meme to fill that void and give voice to the side of me that isn’t just a Disney freak, not that there’s anything wrong with that.
I hope you’ll join me on this journey, send me tips and interesting things to explore on the internet, and, of course, comment. I aim for Pop Meme to be an evolving site, so I reserve the right to change things as I go along.
